Materials guide
Most of what you will love or regret about a plate comes down to what it is made of. A quick field guide to the six materials on our shelves.
Fired at the highest temperatures, porcelain is dense, non-porous and surprisingly thin for its strength. It shrugs off stains, stacks neatly and suits both weeknights and dinner parties.
Thicker walls and earthy reactive glazes give stoneware its handmade look. It holds heat well, feels substantial in the hand and is the backbone of most casual everyday sets.
Bone ash in the clay body makes this the lightest and most translucent ceramic. Despite the delicate look it is strong; metallic trims usually rule out the microwave.
Everything from tempered tumblers and Corelle's laminated Vitrelle to fine crystal stems. Tempered and laminated glass is light and very hard to chip; crystal trades some toughness for clarity and ring.
Fired at lower temperatures, earthenware is more porous and prone to chips, but it carries bright hand-painted colour beautifully. Treat it gently and it brings real character.
The default for flatware and insulated drinkware. 18/10 grades carry more nickel for extra shine and corrosion resistance; 18/0 is lighter on the wallet and magnet-friendly.
On our table
From heritage potteries to budget everyday sets, every brand is scored on the same scale. These are the names we have reviewed most.
